Cope Ahead
Cope Ahead is a practical rehearsal for an upcoming challenge. You picture using a specific skill, including handling a likely obstacle, rather than repeatedly imagining everything going wrong.
When to use it
- You expect a conversation or event to be difficult
- You know a useful skill but struggle to remember it under pressure
The steps
Pick a situation
Choose a specific upcoming event. Name the emotion and urge you expect, without assuming a prediction is a fact.
Make a short plan
Select a skill and an action you can actually take. Include an exit or support option if the situation could become unsafe.
Rehearse from your own perspective
Imagine arriving, noticing the feeling, and doing the planned action. Practice what you would say out loud if helpful. Include one likely complication.
Return to the present
Finish the rehearsal and orient to where you are now. Keep one brief reminder of your plan. If imagery is distressing, use a written checklist instead.
An example
Before a family dinner, Ari rehearses saying, 'I am not discussing my finances tonight,' then changing the subject. Ari also plans a ride home if the boundary is repeatedly ignored.
